This paper presents a method to reconstruct missing data in satellite observations of the chlorophyll a concentration in the Black Sea. Rather than giving a single possible reconstructed field, the discussed method provides an ensemble of possible reconstructions using a generative neural network. The resulting ensemble is validated using techniques from numerical weather prediction and ocean modelling.

Understanding this peculiar character is still a challenge since there is no exact quantification of nutrient sinks and sources. Because nutrient in situ observations are generally infrequent and scattered in space and time, climatological mapping is often applied to sparse data in order to understand the biogeochemical state of the ocean. The dataset presented here partly addresses these issues.

In this study, we use a numerical hindcast at high resolution (1/12°) to examine the occurrence and properties of Rossby waves in the North Atlantic between 1970–2015. We show evidence of Rossby waves travelling at 39° N at a speed of 4.17 cm s−1. These results are consistent with baroclinic Rossby waves generated by the North Atlantic Oscillation in the central North Atlantic and travelling westward before interacting with the Gulf Stream transport with a time lag of about 2 years.

An intensive drifter deployment was carried out in the Strait of Gibraltar: 35 satellite tracked drifters were released, coordinating to this aim 4 boats, covering an area of about 680 NM2 in 6 hours. This MEDESS-GIB Experiment is the most important exercise in the Mediterranean in terms of number of drifters released. The MEDESS-GIB dataset provides a complete Lagrangian view of the surface inflow of Atlantic waters through the Strait of Gibraltar and its later evolution along the Alboran Sea.

Nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas, remains understudied in coastal areas despite its role in global emissions. This study measured N2O levels and air-sea fluxes in the Balearic coast (Mediterranean Sea) from 2018 to 2023. N2O concentrations showed slight variation across sites, with all areas acting as weak sources of N2O. Temperature emerged as the main factor driving seasonal changes. These insights help refine our understanding of coastal contributions to global N2O emissions.

To address this, alternative approaches separate long-term warming from extreme events. Here we compare two in the Balearic Sea: moving baseline and detrending data. We found a warming trend of 0.036 °C/year, with major MHWs in 2003 and 2022 identified by all methods. Only the fixed baseline shows rising MHW frequency.

The main goal of this work is to showcase the current status of the Mediterranean HFR network as well as present and future applications of this sensor for societal benefit such as search and rescue operations, safe vessel navigation, tracking of marine pollutants, and the monitoring of extreme events.

A clear salinification and warming trend characterizes AW and LIW over the last 2 decades.

The major result is the impact of a fine-scale frontal structure on the distribution of phytoplankton groups, in an area of moderate energy with oligotrophic conditions. Our results provide an in situ confirmation of the findings obtained by previous modeling studies and remote sensing about the structuring effect of the fine-scale ocean dynamics on the structure of the phytoplankton community.

Phytoplankton growth is limited by the availability of iron in about 50 % of the ocean. Atmospheric deposition of desert dust represents a key source of iron. Here, we present direct observations of dust deposition in the Mediterranean Sea. A key finding is that the input of iron from dust primarily occurred in the deep ocean, while previous studies mainly focused on the ocean surface. We show evidence of Rossby waves travelling at 39° N at a speed of 4.17 cm s−1. The AlborEX (the Alboran Sea Experiment) consisted of an experiment in the Alboran Sea (western Mediterranean Sea) that took place between 25 and 31 May 2014, and use a wide range of oceanographic sensors. The dataset provides information on mesoscale and sub-mesoscale processes taking place in a frontal area. This paper presents the measurements obtained from these sensors and describes their particularities: scale, spatial and temporal resolutions, measured variables, etc.
