Around 8200 years ago, Earth experienced an abrupt climate event when melting glaciers disrupted Atlantic Ocean circulation, triggering rapid global changes. Using statistical methods that account for dating uncertainties in paleoclimate records, we find tropical rainfall patterns shifted dramatically for 150 years. The regional complexity of these changes, verified by model simulations, provides insights for understanding how similar ocean changes could impact rainfall in our warming world.

Accurately quantifying how the global hydrological cycle will change in the future remains challenging due to the limited availability of historical climate data from the tropics. Here we present the CoralHydro2k database – a new compilation of peer-reviewed coral-based climate records from the last 2000 years. This paper details the records included in the database and where the database can be accessed and demonstrates how the database can investigate past tropical climate variability.

The distributions of water isotopic properties (δ18O, δ2H, deuterium excess) as a function of salinity are studied in the surface Atlantic Ocean and southwest Indian Ocean using the CISE-LOCEAN data base. Large spatial gradients are found as well as a seasonal variability in the North Atlantic sub-polar gyre and in the equatorial Atlantic. Spatially-averaged seasonal cycles are established in these regions, as well as at the BATS site (31°50’ N, 64°10’ W), with weak interannual variability.

Benthic foraminifera from sediment cores collected in the Gulf of Cadiz were analysed to track ocean changes between 1014 and 761 kyr ago. Our results reveal shifts in species composition throughout the climate cycles. Oxygen loss occurred in the Mediterranean Outflow Water during warmer periods when solar insolation was intensified and productivity was higher. During cold periods, stronger bottom currents were identified by sand content and the abundance of the species Planulina ariminensis.

We present CoralCache, a virtual coral core repository with global coverage. This repository fills a key gap by enabling researchers to transparently archive and share the raw core image datasets and the visual interpretations of those images, rather than simply the summarized growth rate data, which on their own cannot be traced or precisely reproduced. CoralCache is designed to meet the data-sharing principles of findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (FAIR).

We generated high resolution geochemical records from well-preserved fossil corals of the penultimate glacial (~150 000 years ago) and last glacial (~30 000 years ago) periods drilled at Tahiti in the central tropical South Pacific. The fossil records revealed that the glacial mean seawater temperature was 3–4 °C lower and had greater seasonality than present. Our coral-based reconstructions document oceanographic and hydroclimatological changes in glacial periods extremely different from today.

Using a stalagmite from Whiterock Cave (Gunung Mulu National Park, Northern Borneo), covering the time interval from 460000 to 333000 years B.P., including two glacial terminations, we employed nucleation-assisted fluid inclusion microthermometry to reconstruct a tropical cave temperature record. The record reveals an amplitude of glacial-interglacial temperature changes of 4.2 °C and a strong linear correlation with Antarctic temperature anomalies, yielding a polar amplification factor of 2.3.

Our research explores climatic changes during the Early–Middle Pleistocene (1006–750 ka) on the southern Portuguese margin. We found that warm, subtropical-gyre-related conditions dominated. However, those conditions were occasionally interrupted by extreme cold events during the glacial periods. Our data show that these cold events, linked to changes in the North Atlantic's circulation, reached as far south as 36° N and significantly impacted marine ecosystems in the surface ocean.

Water isotopes in the ocean trace the freshwater exchanges between the ocean, the atmosphere, and the cryosphere and are used to investigate processes of the hydrological cycle. We illustrate offsets in seawater isotopic composition between different datasets that are larger than the expected variability that one often wants to explore. This highlights the need to share seawater isotopic composition samples dedicated to specific intercomparison of data produced in different laboratories.

Our research discovered significant seasonal temperature variations in the North Atlantic's mid-latitudes during the early Late Pliocene. This highlights the necessity of using multiple methods to get a full picture of past climates, thus avoiding a biased understanding of the climate system. Moreover, our study reveals that the precession signal, which previously dominated surface temperature records, disappeared with the increased influence of the ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere.

Understanding whether the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is likely to change in the future is important due to its widespread impacts. By using large ensembles, we can robustly isolate the time-evolving response of ENSO variability in 14 climate models. We find that ENSO variability evolves in a nonlinear fashion in many models and that there are large differences between models. These nonlinear changes imply that ENSO impacts may vary dramatically throughout the 21st century.

The CISE-LOCEAN seawater stable isotope dataset has close to 8000 data entries. The δ18O and δD isotopic data measured at LOCEAN have uncertainties of at most 0.05 ‰ and 0.25 ‰, respectively. Some data were adjusted to correct for evaporation. The internal consistency indicates that the data can be used to investigate time and space variability to within 0.03 ‰ and 0.15 ‰ in δ18O–δD17; comparisons with data analyzed in other institutions suggest larger differences with other datasets.

The Last Interglacial (LIG) is a warm period characterized by a higher-than-present sea level. For this reason, scientists use it as an analog for future climatic conditions. In this paper, we use the World Atlas of Last Interglacial Shorelines database to standardize LIG sea-level data along the coasts of the western Atlantic and mainland Caribbean, identifying 55 unique sea-level indicators.

Short summary
The stable isotopic composition of seawater is a valuable tool for studying the global water cycle in the past, present, and future. However, an active repository dedicated to archiving this type of data has been lacking, and many datasets remain hidden from public view. We have created a new database of observational seawater isotope data that is rich in metadata, publicly accessible, and machine readable to increase its availability and usability for a variety of Earth Science applications.
