Understanding causality in Earth-system processes is challenging because multiple drivers act simultaneously and can distort causal estimates. We develop a diagnostic framework using controlled experiments and real land–atmosphere data to identify when external drivers affect how one variable influences another (via Liang–Kleeman Information Flow). This influence depends on system stress, guiding when multivariate conditioning is necessary.

Understanding and predicting extreme floods is crucial for reducing disaster risks, yet existing models struggle with unprecedented events. We tested multiple modeling approaches across 400+ river catchments in Central Europe and found that deep learning models outperform traditional methods but still underestimate extreme floods. Our findings suggest that combining data-driven models with physical knowledge can improve flood predictions, helping communities better prepare for future extremes.

This study developed a convenient and new method to identify the occurrence of droughts, heatwaves, and co-occurring droughts and heatwaves (CDHW) across four seasons. Using this method, we could establish the start and/or end dates of drought (or heatwave) events. We found an increase in the frequency of heatwaves and CDHW events in Belgium caused by climate change. We also found that different months have different chances of CDHW events.

This study examines changes in water yield by determining turning points in the direction of yield changes and highlights that regime shifts in historical water yield occurred in the Upper Brahmaputra River basin, both the climate and cryosphere affect the magnitude of water yield increases, climate determined the declining trends in water yield, and meltwater has the potential to alleviate the water shortage. In this study, we use the deep learning (DL) method to generate the temperature data for the global land (except Antartica) at higher spatial resolution (0.5 degree) based on 31 different CMIP6 Earth system model(ESM). Our methods can perform bias correction, spatial downscaling and data merging simultaneously. The merged data have a remarkably better quality compared with the individual ESMs in terms of both spatial dimension and time dimension.

Editorial statement
This manuscripts presents a global data catalog of compound dry-hot extremes. Having such a dataset available to the community and knowing exactly when and where extreme events occur is highly relevant. Having a readily available data base for such events could greatly reduce the preparatory effort for these studies and guide more targeted regional to local analyses that could improve process understanding and monitoring efforts.

Short summary
This study provides a daily global compound dry–hot index (SSTCI - Standardized Soil Moisture–Temperature Compound Index) for researchers and a ready-to-use CDHE (Compound dry-hot extreme) catalogue for wider users, recording when and where each extreme event occurred, its duration and severity (1961–2023, 0.1°). Built on soil moisture memory and surface air temperature, they show CDHEs have become more frequent and longer lasting in many regions in recent decades, supporting targeted studies of impacts on water, ecosystems and agriculture.
