This paper presents the fourth version of the ESA Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative global in situ bio-optical database. The updated compilation combines observations from many international data sources collected between 1996 and 2025 and includes major expansions in coverage and variables. The dataset provides a consistent reference for validating satellite ocean-colour products and supports algorithm development and long-term climate studies.

The Coastal Atmosphere and Sea Time Series (CoASTS) and Bio-Optical mapping of Marine Properties (BiOMaP) programs produced bio-optical data supporting satellite ocean color applications across European seas for almost 2 decades. CoASTS and BiOMaP applied equal standardized instruments, measurement methods, quality control schemes and processing codes to ensure temporal and spatial consistency with data products.

A compiled set of in situ data is vital to evaluate the quality of ocean-colour satellite data records. Here we describe the global compilation of bio-optical in situ data (spanning from 1997 to 2021) used for the validation of the ocean-colour products from the ESA Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI). The compilation merges and harmonizes several in situ data sources into a simple format that could be used directly for the evaluation of satellite-derived ocean-colour data.

Spectrally resolved glint correction factors for above-water radiometric measurements were computed for a wide range of atmospheric, wind and illumination conditions typical of inland, coastal and open-ocean regions. Computations, relying on the FEM and MOX radiative transfer codes, adopt the AERONET-OC observation geometry and account for both the total sky radiance and for its sole diffuse component. Computed glint correction factors are available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.20609990.

Short summary
The Coastal Atmosphere & Sea Time Series (CoASTS) and the Bio-Optical mapping of Marine optical Properties (BiOMaP) programs were conceived to support ocean color applications with field measurements of apparent and inherent optical properties. This work focusses on CoASTS and BiOMaP hyperspectral absorption coefficients of optically significant constituents as determined applying standardized instruments, community measurement methods, quality control schemes and consolidated processing codes.
