Subduction zones feature a large elevation difference between the deep oceanic trench and the high mountains on land, which causes stress in the upper plate. We investigate how the topographic stress affects the aftershock seismicity of large subduction earthquakes using analytical and numerical stress models. We show that topographic stress has a large influence on aftershock seismicity and promoted most of the seismicity after the Tohoku-Oki (Japan) and Maule (Chile) earthquakes.

We present a new earthquake catalog for western Greece in 2023–2024 built using new seismic data that increased regional coverage. We study earthquake clustering and show both broad patterns with more earthquakes in the north, and three notable sequences with > 100 earthquakes that have different statistical behavior. Seismic sequences appear to be driven by tectonic loading in the north and external forces further south, possibly related to slab-derived fluid migration.

In this study, we investigate the evolution of fault reactivation potential in the greater Ruhr region (Germany) in respect to a future utilization of deep geothermal resources. We use analytical and numerical approaches to understand the initial stress conditions on faults as well as their evolution in space and time during geothermal fluid production. Using results from our analyses, we can localize areas more favorable for geothermal energy use based on fault reactivation potential.

Passive seismic analyses are a key technology for geothermal projects. The Lower Rhine Embayment, at the western border of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany, is a geologically complex region with high potential for geothermal exploitation. Here, we report on a passive seismic dataset recorded with 48 seismic stations and a total extent of 20 km. We demonstrate that the network design allows for the application of state-of-the-art seismological methods.

Short summary
This study uses two weeks of new distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) data together with recordings from the Hellenic Unified Seismic Network to construct a detailed catalog of small earthquakes around Kefalonia Island (Greece). The analysis identifies and locates thousands of microearthquakes, many clustered offshore northwest of Kefalonia. The publicly available dataset includes the earthquake catalog and continuous DAS waveforms.
