We present the results of comprehensive pre-site surveys and deep drillings in two clay pans in the central Atacama Desert of northern Chile, one of the driest deserts on Earth. The results of the site surveys as well as lithological and downhole-logging data of the deep-drilling operations highlight the potential of the sediment records from the PAG (Playa Adamito Grande) and Paranal clay pans to provide unprecedented information on the Neogene precipitation history of the hyperarid core of the Atacama Desert.

The Christiana Islands represents the oldest subaerial volcanism in the Christiana-Santorini-Kolombo volcanic field, but the exact age of this volcano has been unknown. This study reports new 40Ar/39Ar ages of ten volcanic samples from Christiana Island that cluster between 2.5–2.7 Ma with small uncertainties (0.02–0.14 Ma). One sample dated much younger: 133 ka; this is most likely derived from the Middle Pumice Plinian eruption of Santorini.

Using satellite sea surface temperature records and sea ice information, we found that waters off Commonwealth Bay in East Antarctica became more persistently cold after iceberg "B09B" grounded in 2011. Cold extreme events grew stronger and more organized along a narrow shelf pathway. The results suggest that the iceberg changed local ocean and sea ice conditions in ways that helped cold surface water last longer, with possible consequences for coastal ecosystems and Antarctic shelf circulation.

In Central Chile's steep watersheds, floodwaters recede by 50 % within days of peaking. This rapid "flash-flood" drainage creates a temporal mismatch with satellite schedules. A radar image captured just 24 hours late misses the peak, recording only a minimum flood area rather than the true severity. In these high-relief environments, physical drainage limits satellite accuracy, making it essential to combine snapshots with models to reconstruct the full extent of the disaster.

This study explores quartz veins in Germany's Rursee area, formed during the Variscan Orogeny and later reactivated by tectonic activity in the Jurassic–Cretaceous period. Using advanced isotopic dating techniques, it examines how these veins influenced fluid flow and quartz recrystallization. By tackling the challenges of dating fluid activity, this research offers new insights into argon gas degassing in quartz minerals.

A total of 42 Earth scientists from 14 countries met in Gioia dei Marsi, central Italy, on 23 to 27 October 2023 to explore the potential for deep drilling of the thick lake sediment sequence of the Fucino Basin. The aim was to reconstruct the history of climate, ecosystem, and biodiversity changes and of the explosive volcanism and tectonics in central Italy over the last 3.5 million years, constrained by a detailed radiometric chronology.

Many important processes within the global mercury (Hg) cycle operate over thousands of years. Here, we explore the timing, magnitude, and expression of Hg signals retained in sediments of lakes Prespa and Ohrid over the past ∼90 000 years. Divergent signals suggest that local differences in sediment composition, lake structure, and water balance influence the local Hg cycle and determine the extent to which sedimentary Hg signals reflect local- or global-scale environmental changes.

The island of Patmos is situated in the southern Aegean Sea (Greece), just north of the present locus of active volcanism. The island is almost entirely built up of volcanic rocks that are 6.6 to 5.2 million years old. We obtain these ages with 40Ar / 39Ar dating technique on sanidine and biotite minerals. Our new age data indicate a geologically brief volcanic period (lasting less than 1.5 million years) that can be divided into three volcanic intervals and correlated to tectonics.

In this study we performed high-resolution climate model simulations for the hyper-arid Atacama Desert for the mid-Pliocene (3.2 Ma). The aim is to uncover the atmospheric processes that are involved in the enhancement of strong rainfall events during this period. We find that strong upper-level moisture fluxes (so-called moisture conveyor belts) originating in the tropical eastern Pacific are the main driver for increased rainfall in the mid-Pliocene.

Levinson-Lessing Lake in northern central Siberia provides an exceptional opportunity to study the evolution of the Earth's magnetic field in the Arctic. This is the first study carried out at the lake that focus on the palaeomagnetic record. It presents the relative palaeointensity and palaeosecular variation of the upper 38 m of sediment core Co1401, spanning ~62 kyr. A comparable high-resolution record of this time does not exist in the Eurasian Arctic.

Short summary
The TephAta database collects information on volcanic ash layers from the Atacama Desert, including their physical properties, geochemical composition, and age. The dataset provides a basis for identifying the same volcanic ash layers in different sediment deposits making it possible to link and date sediments It also supports studying how ash spread and understanding the region’s volcanic past.
