Volcanic lakes have been recognized as a rare but devastating source of disasters after the limnic eruption of Lake Nyos in 1986. The potential risk of Lake Albano (20 km southeast of the centre of Rome, Italy) is due to exposed elements (people presence, economic and touristic activities). The 3D modelling of the lake dynamics is crucial to investigate the lake stratification and degassing and the current and future behavior and stability of Lake Albano.

This paper presents the results of the first 2 years of the Levante Canyon Mooring, a mooring line placed since 2020 in the eastern Ligurian Sea, to study a canyon area at about 600 m depth characterized by the presence of cold-water living corals. It provides hydrodynamic and thermohaline measurements along the water column, describing a water-mass distribution coherent with previous evidence in the Ligurian Sea. The data also show a Northern Current episodic and local reversal during summer.

The powerful jets of currents induced by vessels' propellers in ports often cause areas of erosion and deposition, strongly impacting the port's operability. The capacity to fully understand and predict these complex dynamics would be a fundamental help for port operators in order to optimize and efficiently plan port management and seabed maintenance. In the present work, we show how this is possible using high-resolution modeling of hydrodynamics and sediment transport.

The Histoire physique de la mer, written by Luigi Ferdinando Marsili in 1725, was one of the first treatises to analyse the science of the sea. However, it is difficult to understand Marsili's original data. This paper reports the results of a major effort that has been undertaken to re-evaluate Marsili's observations, converting historical measurements into modern units – water weight to water density – with bathymetric profiles mapping the locations where these measurements were made and sea level variations alongside consideration of the associated error.
